Jack-O'-Lantern Coloring Pages

Three jack-o'-lantern coloring pages: a baby dinosaur hatching out of a jack-o'-lantern, a jack-o'-lantern with star-shaped eyes and Humpty Dumpty as a jack-o'-lantern on a wall

Every jack-o'-lantern here got its face from someone. One is sleepy, one winks, one sticks out its tongue. Two are not finished yet: a blank pumpkin and one with only half a face carved. Those faces are yours to draw.

Start with one big simple pumpkin, or take your time on the Headless Horseman. Print the PDF, or color online in your browser.

Launch Your Imagination

Coloring is the start. Pick one mission and the page becomes yours.

  1. The blank pumpkin has no face yet. Draw the one you would carve, then write a name for it underneath.
  2. Finish the half-carved face so both sides match, or make the second half completely different on purpose.
  3. The snow globe has an empty plaque on its base. Write a name for the little jack-o'-lantern village inside.
  4. Turn the Stingy Jack page over and finish the story: which road does he take, and what is waiting at the end of it?
  5. Color the string of jack-o'-lantern lights, cut it out along the cord and tape it across a window or a door.

Ideas for Coloring Jack-O'-Lantern

  • Glow from insideLeave a small white spot in the middle of each carved eye, then shade from yellow to orange toward the edges, so the light seems to come from a candle inside.
  • Night or day?The lantern parade and the corn maze happen after dark, the spoon race and the bounce house in daylight. Pick the sky color first and choose the rest to match it.
  • Crayon resist for night skiesOn the stone wall or corn maze page, draw the stars and the moon in white crayon, then brush dark blue watercolor over the sky. The crayon shows through.
  • White gel penWhen the markers are dry, add a thin white line along the top of a few pumpkins, where the moonlight or a porch lamp would catch them.
  • Turnip, not pumpkinThe first jack-o'-lanterns were carved turnips. Try pale purple and cream on the turnip lantern, then put it next to one of the orange pumpkins.
  • Color onlineThe jack-o'-lantern faces pattern has dozens of separate pumpkins, and in the online tool each one fills with a single tap, so every face can get its own color.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called a jack-o'-lantern?

The name goes back to an Irish folk tale about Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil and was left to wander at night with a coal glowing inside a carved turnip. In Ireland and Scotland lanterns were carved from turnips; in America pumpkins took over. Both Stingy Jack and the turnip lantern have a page here.

Are these jack-o'-lantern coloring pages scary?

Most are not. These pumpkins wink, grin, juggle and ride a carousel. A few detailed pages, such as the Headless Horseman, the gargoyle on the cathedral and Stingy Jack at the foggy crossroads, are moodier, but nothing is gory.

Are there jack-o'-lantern coloring pages for adults?

Yes. The mandala, the zentangle, the folk-art and the geometric jack-o'-lanterns, the two patterns, the steampunk pumpkin and the carvings of a haunted house and an owl have fine lines and many small spaces.

Where are the pumpkins without faces?

In the Pumpkin coloring pages, which follow pumpkins from the patch to the pie. This collection is about carved ones, with one exception: a blank pumpkin left for drawing your own face.
